Looking for something else? Atlanta is the booming foodie capital of the South!

Staplehouse

541 Edgewood Ave SE
Atlanta, GA 30312
http://www.staplehouse.com/

No one is cooking with as much soul or cerebrum as Ryan Smith right now. Although the chef dropped his sought-after tasting menu last fall, his food—inventive, impeccably sourced, and masterfully manipulated—is no less loved. Highlights include an unctuous beef tartare with smoked salmon flakes and chicken liver mousse topped with burnt honey gelée.

Miller Union

999 Brady Ave NW
Atlanta, GA 30318
http://www.millerunion.com

Steven Satterfield’s intentions are clearest in his summer vegetable plate, loaded with crunchy stalks of fried okra, peas, and corn scented with tarragon. This is a chef who loves Georgia and accepts – with glee – what its soil gives him. This Westside loft is as much a place to drink wine as it is to eat.

BoccaLupo

753 Edgewood Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30307
http://boccalupoatl.com/

Here’s what our ideal neighborhood restaurant looks like: a T-shirt–friendly dress code; impeccable, often surprising food; and bartenders who shake as well as they decant. You’ll find all of that at Bruce Logue’s pasta bungalow, where Old World Italian staples get New World makeovers.

Bacchanalia

1460 Ellsworth Industrial Blvd NW
Atlanta, GA 30318
http://www.starprovisions.com/bacchanalia/

Next month Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison will embark on the third evolution of their Star Provisions empire, as they move its crown jewel, Bacchanalia, to a new building on Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard. Executive chef Joe Schafer brings a more direct approach to Southern produce. Here’s looking forward to this next chapter for Atlanta’s culinary queen.

Gunshow

924 Garrett St
Atlanta, GA 30316
http://gunshowatl.com/

Built upon the singular promise of eating well and without pretension, Kevin Gillespie’s Gunshow is our city’s gutsiest restaurant. Although the dining room is short on luxury, the menu format is game-changing. Expect bold and playful food, riffs on beef tartare and Chinese dumplings, and even throwbacks like a show-stopping beef Wellington.

Ticonderoga Club

99 Krog St NE W
Atlanta, GA 30307
https://www.ticonderogaclub.com/

This dark little room in the corner of Krog Street Market might be known for Greg Best and Paul Calvert’s cocktails, but it’s a real restaurant—and one you should try. Executive chef David Bies’s dry-aged roasted duck is arguably better than anything in Beijing, where the dish was invented, and his icy blue mussels could broker international treaties.

Kevin Rathbun Steak

154 Krog St NE #200
Atlanta, GA 30307
http://www.kevinrathbun.com/restaurants.html

This glossy steakhouse on the Atlanta BeltLine has long attracted expense account diners and intimate couples, both drawn to Kevin Rathbun’s all-American bravado. You’ll need an appetite to tackle the 26-ounce porterhouse, not to mention standout sides such as traditional creamed spinach and onion rings.

Watershed on Peachtree

1820 Peachtree St NW
Atlanta, GA 30309
http://www.watershedrestaurant.com/

Chef Zeb Stevenson’s arrival at this 18-year-old institution signaled a renewed interest in progressive Southern cuisine. Original dishes like fried chicken, mac and cheese, and chocolate cake are still available (and still fantastic), but now Stevenson flavors the sauce with shrimp heads giving the shrimp and grits that extra oomph.

One Eared Stag

1029 Edgewood Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30307
http://www.oneearedstag.com/

Anchored by a big, friendly bar, One Eared Stag is the quintessential neighborhood restaurant. Robert Phalen’s menu swings from the quirky (risotto with black truffles and boiled peanuts) to the familiar (pasta carbonara, two-inch-thick heritage pork chops). When in doubt, order the off-menu meatstick, a two-patty burger made with beef and ground bacon.

The Optimist

914 Howell Mill Rd
Atlanta, GA 30318
http://theoptimistrestaurant.com/

With the mini-golf lawn outside, you don’t really need the dinner menu to have a grand time at Ford Fry’s seafood sensation. But you’ll want to eat. Your ideal meal: the best lobster roll in the city, stuffed with claw meat and wood-roasted oysters blanketed with lemon, Parmesan, and breadcrumbs. Now that’s a good time.
