A Legacy of Excellence
Founded in 1957 by world-renowned architect and developer John C. Portman, Jr., AmericasMart began life as The Atlanta Merchandise Mart, first staged in Atlanta’s Belle Isle Building. In 1961, the first dedicated building – now known as Building 1 – opened and laid the foundation for what is now a fully integrated three-building campus spanning more than 7 million square feet. Portman sought to create a unique environment for wholesale exchange with easy access to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. By stimulating trade and tourism, Portman was the catalyst that established Atlanta as one of the nation’s premiere convention cities.
In 2018, AmericasMart merged with International Market Centers, now ANDMORE, to form the world’s largest owner and operator of premier showroom space.
1957
Architect-developer John Portman stages his first furniture market in the garage of downtown Atlanta’s Belle Isle Building.
1961
Atlanta Merchandise Mart (Now Building 1) opens as the first unit of the Atlanta Market Center.
1968
Merchandise Mart first expansion opens.
1979
Atlanta Apparel Mart (Now Building 3) opens.
1986
Merchandise Mart second expansion opens.
1988
Atlanta Apparel Mart expansion opens.
1992
Atlanta Gift Mart (Now Building 2) opens.
1996
Atlanta Market Center rebranded as AmericasMart Atlanta to establish the market’s new global trademark.
2009
AmericasMart Building 2 West Wing expansion opens.
2018
AmericasMart merges with International Market Centers.
2023
International Market Centers rebrands as ANDMORE, the only Omnichannel Wholesale Marketmaker.
