John C. Portman, Jr. has served as chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and a director of AmericasMart since founding the company in 1957. Mr. Portman was also the principal of the Portman Companies for more than forty years. He has served as the chairman of Portman Properties, Inc. and the managing general partner of Portman Holdings since its formation.
When Jeff Portman went to work on the Atlanta Merchandise Mart loading dock at age eight, the company known then as the Atlanta Market Center was only beginning to anticipate a path toward national and international prominence. Today, more than four decades later, Portman stands at the helm of AMC, Inc., the world’s largest trade mart/trade show organization, parent entity of Atlanta Market Center successor AmericasMart Atlanta, the nation’s largest wholesale home/gift/apparel marketplace and a leading venue for global trade.
R. Charles Loudermilk has been on the Company’s board of directors since its formation. Mr. Loudermilk is the founder of Aaron Rents, Inc. and is currently the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He is one of the founders and a director of the Buckhead Community Bank, formerly a director of the Chattahoochee Bank, and formerly the chairman of Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.
D. Raymond Riddle has served as a director since the company began. Mr. Riddle retired as chairman and chief executive officer of National Service Industries, Inc. in January 1995, having served as president and chief executive officer beginning in January 1993. Previously, he was president and chief executive officer of Wachovia Corporation of Georgia for more than five years. Mr. Riddle serves on the boards of Atlanta Gas Light Company, Equifax, Inc., and Atlantic American Corporation.
A. J. Robinson is President of Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District. He was formerly President of Portman Holdings and Portman Development and responsible for all activities including Atlanta, Charlotte, Shanghai and Warsaw offices. Prior to his joining the Portman Companies in 1981, A.J. Worked for the U.S. Commerce Department in Dalian, People’s Republic of China. A native of Knoxville ,Tennessee, he is a 1980 graduate of Harvard School of Business, earning a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, with high distinction, from Emory University in 1977. A.J.’s business and civic interests include the following positions: Director, AMC, Inc.; The Alliance Theater; Member and former President, American Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. Southeast Region; former Board Member and Past President, the World Trade Club Atlanta; Emory Board of Visitors; Co-Chairman, Georgia Peach PAC; Member, National Realty Committee; Member, Young President’s Organization (YPO); Board Member, Greenfield Hebrew Academy; Trustee, Marcus Jewish Community Center; and former Board Member, The Atlanta Jewish Federation.
Stanley P. Steinberg has served as a member of the Board Of Directors of AmericasMart since the company was formed. Mr. Steinberg served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Retail Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, from August 1994 through May 1998; he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Walt Disney Imagineering, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, from September 1988 through July 1994; and prior to that time, he served as Executive Vice President of The Portman Companies, Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Steinberg is currently a private consultant and serves as Senior Advisor to Casas, Benjamin and White, LLC. Mr. Steinberg also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Electronics Boutique Holding Corp. (NASDAQ - ELBO), Reckson Associates Realty Corp. (NYSE - RA) and ECI Group (Privately Held, Atlanta based, apartment developer, construction, management company).
Andrew J. Young has been a director of the company since its formation. Mr. Young has been co-chairman and a senior partner of Good Works International, Inc. since January 1997. He was vice chairman of Law Companies Group, Inc. from 1993 through January 1997, and a director of that company from August 1995 through January 1997. He was chairman of Law Companies International Group, Inc. (a former subsidiary of Law Companies Group, Inc.) from 1990 to 1993. Mr. Young was the mayor of Atlanta from 1982 to 1990, United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 1977 to 1979, and a member of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress from 1973 to 1977. Mr. Young is a director of Archer Daniels Midland Company; Cox Communications, Inc.; Film Fabricators, Inc.; Host Marriott Corporation;The Argus Board (The International Advisory Board of Independent Newspapers Holdings Limited); and Thomas Nelson, Inc. He is chairman of the Southern Africa Enterprise Development Fund, a member of the Georgia Tech Advisory Board, and a director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center. He was co-chairman of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and a member of the board of the United States Olympic Committee. Mr. Young also served as the 1996 chairman of the Greater Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
Alvis (Al) Campbell serves as Senior Advisor to the Chairman. Al has a long and distinguished legal career spanning more than thirty years. He worked with the law firm of Hansell & Post from 1969 to 1989, and with its successor, Jones Day, from 1989 until 2000. During his tenure with Hansell & Post and Jones Day, Al served for many years as primary outside legal counsel for the various Portman Companies. After electing to take early retirement from the practice of law, Al joined Portman to serve as a senior business advisor to John Portman and the various Portman Companies. In this capacity, he works closely with the senior executives of Portman Holdings to consult on potential and ongoing projects, debt and equity financing, and asset management. His expertise in the legal realm of commercial real estate brings a valuable perspective to the company. Al received his undergraduate M.A. degree from Guilford College in 1966, and his J.D. degree from the Duke University School of Law in 1969.
